Movie Review by Zara November 17th, 2008

Let me start off by first saying in clear words: I liked this movie.
I will also remind people that I was very much against them making this movie. I was against the promotion and I am against the proposed (are they or aren't they?) sequel to it.
Then I will continue on to say that I've watched every episode that was put out in the series. I even paid more to get HBO so that I could watch it when it aired instead of waiting for the DVDs to come out. That is, after I rented the first two seasons (or was it three?) on DVD back when I used to go to the rental store. The show became a whirlwind of hype, but for good reason: it had great acting (both from the leads and the regular side characters as well as the guests), fantastic writing and a basic premise that most women could relate to in one form or another.
The show provided me with one of my favorite television characters ever. Charlotte. Most people peg me for a Carrie or a Samantha fan, but it was Kristin Davis who remained true to her character and never failed to deliver, with little to no fanfare compared to the other characters (even Cynthia Nixon eventually won an Emmy for her role as Miranda). It was Davis again who was my favorite here in the movie, her facial expressions more heartbreaking than the jilted Carrie and the one you most root for even though she's seemingly gotten everything she's wanted from life.
This is a movie that was (very smartly) made for the fans of the show. This does not, however, make it perfect. If you're not familiar with the entire storyline that the show followed, some of the more heartfelt moments in the film will not resonate for you. Sure, they gloss over the basics to give you an idea of what you're going to be watching and you get a picture of what the girls were like once we last saw them, but the full reality of each individual is only felt by those who watched them grow over the life of the series.
But much like the show, the movie does start to believe in its own hype at a certain point. And no amount of liking the established characters or being happy to see the girls together again will get you to overlook the (way too) long run time of over 2 and a half hours. In trying to fit an whole season into one movie, they glance off of some subjects, rushing through them and dwell for too long on others.
I will say this again: I liked this movie. It is a good but not a great movie. It is a movie meant for fans of the show and above all else I respect that the people who made it were very respectful of the characters and the true fans. For that, major props. I'm glad they didn't sell anyone out. Even if the movie made too much money at the box office for my finicky tastes.
